Budget footwear and accessories retailer Shoe Zone has revealed that it was hit by a “cyber incident which has resulted in unauthorised access to certain online systems and data”.
Are there likely to be any negative effects for it and its customers from this? The company said that “actions taken to date” have ensured that its website remains operational and the business is continuing to trade with its customers and suppliers.
And so far, it doesn’t expect any financial impact “to be material”.
The company said that on becoming aware of the incident, it “enacted its established IT security protocols and took immediate steps to stop the unauthorised access to its systems and data”.
Specialist third-party consultants have also been engaged to “investigate the nature and extent of the incident, and to implement the incident response plan”. And it’s made reports to the Information Commissioner's Office and the National Cyber Security Centre.
It added that any affected individuals “will be notified as appropriate and in accordance with applicable regulations”.
Last month, the retailer released its interim results with revenue rising only 1.5%, reaching £76.5 million. Store revenue fell 2.8% to £59.4 million, but digital revenue — which has become much more important to the company in recent years — leapt ahead by almost 20% to reach £17.1 million.
Profit before tax rose from £1.5 million to £2.6 million. But adjusted profit before tax was flat at £2.5 million.
