News of potential job cuts at John Lewis and Superdry has been added to with a report that digital retail and technology group THG is cutting 160 jobs across its marketing, sales and warehouse teams.

The company has been investing in the automation of its UK warehouses, with the majority of the jobs, around 100 roles, earmarked to go at its Warrington facility.

Meanwhile around 60 marketing and sales roles are also set to be cut. THG has started a consultation period to axe jobs at Ingenuity, its e-commerce services platform, that will run until the middle of March.

An internal email to workers, initially reported by the Warrington Guardian, read: “Subject to consultation, The Hut Group is proposing to reduce the number of employees employed in the Omega site.

Some “688 employees will be placed at risk, with our current proposal being that circa 100 employees be made redundant.”

Commenting on the Ingenuity job cuts, a spokesman said it was “committed to reviewing operational efficiency across the business, in line with its strategic pivot towards larger enterprise clients”.

He added: “Subject to the ongoing consultation process, these changes will likely result in a number of redundancies. He also said the move is regrettable and THG will support staff affected by the changes, “including exploring redeployment opportunities across the group where appropriate.”

The cuts come despite THG reporting its best quarter of the year as sales edged up 1.1% to £597.9 million across the golden quarter. The business was boosted by strong sales across its beauty division including Cult Beauty and Perricone MD, which delivered growth of 2.6% to £387 million in the quarter.
