Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico reported new cases of measles this week, with the outbreak spreading to central Texas for the first time, the Associated Press reports.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more measles cases have already been reported in the U.S. this year than in all of 2025.

Other states with outbreaks defined as three or more cases include New Mexico, Kansas, Ohio and Oklahoma. Since February, two unvaccinated people have died from measles-related causes.

The outbreak in several states confirms health experts' fears that the virus will spread to other U.S. population centers with low vaccination rates and that the spread could stretch over a year.

The World Health Organization said last week that the cases in Mexico are linked to an outbreak in Texas.

Measles is caused by a highly contagious virus that is airborne and easily transmitted by breathing, sneezing or coughing by an infected person. Measles is preventable with vaccines and has been considered eliminated in the United States since 2000.
