Following the results of the lawsuit, the online retailer will no longer be able to sell counterfeit Chanel goods. Chanel will also receive all the money in the accounts of Amazon sellers stocking the fake merchandise.
After Chanel launched the lawsuit against Amazon in April, a California judge ruled today that the e-commerce giant must take down any stores selling counterfeit Chanel products, such as purses, phone cases and t-shirts. The French luxury brand initially sought $2 million in compensation from each Amazon seller stocking the fake items, however the brand will receive just $100,000 from each defendant, totaling approximately $3 million.
Amazon will also be required to turn over any money remaining in the sellers’ accounts to Chanel and remove any images of fake Chanel products from its site. Some sellers unsuccessfully attempted to escape the lawsuit, with one store claiming its proceeds from selling the goods didn’t exceed $50.
Despite the lawsuit with Chanel, Amazon has recently taken steps to expand its presence in the apparel industry. It recently launched a “try before you buy” clothing service for Amazon Prime customers, and introduced the Echo Look, which provides personal style and shopping advice and lets users document their wardrobes.
