September and October have been tough, and specialist retail chains in France, from fashion to home decoration, sportswear and others, were hoping for more of a boost towards the end of the year. This was not the case in November, since retail sales in French specialist chains were flat compared to 2025, growing by a mere 0.3% according to retail association Procos. This was equivalent to an actual downturn in volumes sold, since retail prices grew on average by 3% on an annual basis.

A disappointing result, as not even the Black Friday sales were able to provide stronger impetus. During the eagerly awaited promotional period, specialist retailers recorded only a 0.4% increase in sales compared to last year.

In November, the beauty and wellness sector fared better than others, their physical sales growing by 7.5%, while sales in specialised food stores grew by 3.5%, and those generated by fashion retailers by 2.1%. Sportswear chains recorded a 2.7% downturn, while home decoration and footwear chains slumped more significantly, by 4.2% and 4.8% respectively.

Between January and November 2025, the in-store revenue of specialist retailers in France increased by 1.7% over the same period in 2025, but volumes sold fell by approximately 1.5%, according to Procos. “Broken down by sector, [revenue] in beauty and wellness increased by 10.7%, but it decreased instead in fashion by 0.6%, in footwear by 0.6%, in culture-gift-toys by 2.2%, and in home decoration by 1.4%,” stated Procos.

Sales for specialist chains in France were equally weak online. E-tail revenue was in fact up by only 0.6% in the first 11 months of the year.

Although December is not yet over, “it is unfortunately already clear that business will not have been good for a large number of retailers in 2025. As a result, all efforts must focus on ensuring that operating costs will rise as little as possible,” said Procos, which once again pleaded with landlords to be mindful of the circumstances of their retailer tenants.
