Mike Ashley may have stepped down from running Frasers Group, but he has just been officially appointed as a consultant to the fast-growing business he built from a single shop.

The consultancy arrangement between Frasers and its founder enables Ashley to advise the company on matters relating to its supply chain and operations, according to The Times.
While Ashley won’t be paid for his services, the report said the consultancy agreement could have raised concerns that he may be acting as a shadow director, holding influence over the board while avoiding liability. But it said Frasers is understood to have taken legal advice to ensure the arrangement “adheres to good governance practice”.
Ashely stepped down from day-to-day control last year and the empire is now run by his son-in-law and Frasers Group CEO Michael Murray. As well as running the firm’s retail operations, he reportedly controls a massive annual war chest to make acquisitions.
Even in the past fortnight, the business has been buying stakes in fast fashion retailer Boohoo and ASOS and electrical goods retailers AO and Currys. That’s on top of major stakes in Hugo Boss, Mulberry and e-tailer N Brown, plus a raft of other now-wholly-owned businesses.
The report said Murray maintains a watchlist of companies he believes have something that could enhance Frasers, offering expertise in key areas such as reaching the youth market. But the company only buys when prices are right.
The Times said there was speculation it’s interested in moving into outlet centres to complement its full-price business and its recent takeover of MySale could be one pointer to this.
