Fashion propped up the UK non-food retail sector during June with the category in positive figures. The growth wasn't huge, but it did beat the wider market’s anaemic growth rate.

Total like-for-like sales across the fashion sector grew 3% last month, buoyed by a spiking in-store sales (+7.2%), due to the increase in high street footfall during the warm weather.

That’s according to BDO’s latest High Street Sales Tracker on Friday, which showed overall retail like-for-like sales grew by 1.9% compared to June 2025.

This June’s weak, below-inflation growth meant sales volumes were significantly down and the homewares sector performed particularly poorly with total sales falling 0.6%, after having also dropped 8.8% a year earlier.

Following May’s poor performance, it’s bad news for retail and the weakness was rammed home by the fact that a year ago, overall sales were rising 8.4%.

The big point is that value sales growth across all sectors remains well below CPI inflation, either meaning a drop in volumes or retailers selling goods at lower margins.

Sophie Michael, Head of Retail and Wholesale at BDO LLP, said: “Like-for-like sales growth has failed to exceed the rate of inflation every month since July 2025. As the Government attempts to reach its target of halving inflation by the end of the year with a continued cycle of interest rate rises, we expect to see discretionary spend and sales volumes fall even further as rate rises begin to take effect and more households are hit by significantly higher mortgage and rent payments. The competition for the consumer purse has never been more important.”

She also pointed out that insolvencies in the retail sector have increased significantly recently, adding that the sector “is a vital cog in the UK’s economic engine. It is a major employer and requires urgent support to prevent further decline”.

Her analysis included a plea for the return of VAT-free shopping for international tourists — a frequent refrain from just about everyone in, or connected to, retail.
