Selfridges launches Loanhood swap shopBy

Selfridges is continuing its deep dive into circularity with the launch of a partnership with Loanhood, a swap shop first for the luxe department store covering both women’s and menswear.

Opening on 10 July, it means consumers can swap their own fashion pieces for other pre-owned items until 30 July as the store continues to convince consumers to extend the life of items and re-use them rather than simply buying new.

Such an initiative is likely to encourage plenty of consumers to dig out those items in their wardrobes that are sitting there unworn. The chance to swap them for something they might actually wear means the pieces are less likely to carry on attracting dust (and moth holes) before being thrown away at some point and consigned to landfill.

Tickets for the event are free with visitors having to book a two-hour time slot.

They can then swap up to five items of clean clothing per ticket, although intimates and swim, footwear and accessories aren’t included. Neither is anything that’s been customised

The items must have a resale value of between £50 and £300 and will be valued by Selfridges team members who’ll issue stamps that can be used to ‘pay’ for other pre-owned items. If nothing suitable is available, the visitor can come back on another day.

Selfridges said of all this: “So many people have clothes in their wardrobes that they aren’t wearing. Instead of throwing them away, A Swap Shop by Loanhood is here to circulate them, prolonging their life.”
