Stockmann had some big news last week. The Finland-based department stores operator and owner of the international Lindex fashion brand has begun a “strategic assessment”, is considering a name change to Lindex and looking at “strategic alternatives for the Department Stores business”.

The company said the board has kicked off the review to “crystallise shareholder value by refocusing the group's business on Lindex”.

Understandably, it’s mulling the name change as part of this in a move that underlines just how much individual brands have taken over from department stores globally as star operations in retailers’ portfolios.

The company said the “possible name change would better reflect Lindex division’s role in the group’s business. In 2025, with revenues of €661 million, Lindex represented over two-thirds of Stockmann Group’s revenues and, with an operating profit of €90 million, Lindex was the main profit contributor within the group”.

The department stores would continue to operate under the Stockmann brand and “as part of the investigation of strategic alternatives for [that] business, the company will evaluate the best environment for developing the business in the future”.

The option on the table are “increasing the business’s independence within the group, considering possible ownership changes or strategic partnerships, or continuing under the current structure”.

Group chair Sari Pohjonen said: “Lindex has had a fundamental role in improving the performance of the group over the years. The launch of the strategic assessment of considering a name change and evaluating strategic alternatives for the Department Stores business is a natural next step in our strategy. The strategic assessment will not impact the Stockmann Department Stores iconic brand or daily business.”

Any decision on the name change will ultimately be subject to a decision by Stockmann plc's general meeting and “will be made at a later date”. Stockmann expects the strategic assessment to be finalised during 2025.
