Good news for retailers targeting Valentine’s spend. Not so good for some consumers. It appears 61% of 2,000 consumers say they would enter a relationship before Valentine’s Day just to get a present - 40% had done so before.

The survey by CouponBirds also found that respondents on average will spend £144.37 on their partner’s gifts. Men are more likely to splash the cash with an average spend of £178.81 compared to women who spend £125.77 on average.
Those aged 35-44 are most likely to spend the most with this age bracket averaging £165.71. Meanwhile, 18-24 year olds, with the least spending power, average lowest at £105.22. Across all age groups, 2% are prepared to spend over £400!
Also, 39% of those surveyed spend equal amounts on their partner’s Valentine’s Day gift as they spend on their birthday, highlighting how important the day is as a shopping event. A small minority at 10% do not buy Valentine’s Day presents.
Overall, 75% of those surveyed said it’s the thought that counts rather than the price of the gift -- and only 1% of men disagreed, compared to 16% of women.
Meanwhile, 62% said that they would tell their partner if they were disappointed with their present and didn’t believe enough money had been spent -- with 24% having already done so in the past. For those people, 33% said their partner had bought them another present, 23% said their partner had apologised, and for an unfortunate 18%, it led to the couple breaking up.
