American scientists from the University of Pennsylvania College of Medicine and other research centers have found that various types of psychotherapy significantly improve the condition of patients with chronic low back pain. The study was published in the scientific journal JAMA Network Open.
The experiment involved 770 patients who had been taking opioids for a long time because of persistent pain. Participants were assigned to receive either mindfulness-based therapy (focusing on sensations) or cognitive behavioral therapy (changing negative thoughts), which were conducted in two-hour group sessions led by a therapist over an eight-week period.
After the mindfulness or CBT course, participants reduced their opioid dose without coercion, increased physical activity levels and improved mental health. The effects persisted for a year.
The researchers noted that people living with chronic pain assemble a toolkit filled with various self-preservation and self-care techniques to cope with pain. They may use these tools at different times and in different ways.
