Surgeons at the Meshalkin National Medical Research Center in Novosibirsk, Russia are the first in the country to eliminate a rare heart defect in a 27-year-old patient through a 7-centimeter mini-incision, the center's press service reports.
The patient was found to have a left coronary artery that originated not from the aorta—which is normal—but from the pulmonary artery trunk, which is a rare congenital anomaly. Due to improper connection of the vessels, the heart muscle received venous blood instead of arterial blood rich in oxygen, and this led to poor nutrition of the heart, ischemia, angina pectoris, and myocardial infarction.
“A rare case in adult cardiac surgery: a 27-year-old mother of two children was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect. An extremely small percentage of patients with this defect survive to adulthood, unaware of their illness. The operation to eliminate it became the first attempt in Russia to correct such an anomaly in adults,” the aforesaid center’s press service said in a statement.
The doctors moved the beginning of the coronary artery to the correct position without stretching and without bypasses and synthetic means. They covered the defect in the pulmonary trunk with a “patch.” The surgery was performed with minimally invasive intervention—only 7 centimeters.
“This approach ensured the patient’s rapid recovery and a good cosmetic effect. All symptoms of angina pectoris disappeared from the girl. There is a high probability that in just a few months she will become an ordinary healthy person,” added the Meshalkin National Medical Research Center.
