Supermarkets giant Sainsbury’s already has a major share of UK fashion through its Tu Clothing line but now it’s targeting an even bigger slice of the pie with the opening of branded fashion destination hubs alongside Tu in at least 50 stores.

The initial launch sees seven third-party brand partners arriving in nine new Sainsbury’s fashion destination hubs this month.

They include womenswear labels Sosandar, Finery, Simply Be, Little Mistress by Vogue Williams, Thought, Burgs and Brakeburn. And the move comes with a promise for the retailer to “grow its branded proposition at pace over the next five years”.

The company said it’s “focused on meeting its customers’ evolving needs” and has made significant investment into the development as it furthers its ambitions “to become a leading physical and digital destination for inclusive family fashion in the UK”.

With the company claiming 23 million customers in Britain, there’s a huge opportunity for its to grow its share. But in the modern retail sector, any company that wants to do so clearly needs to wholeheartedly embrace third-party labels as the rest of the market is doing.

Companies such as M&S and Next have made a major impact using this strategy. And like M&S in particular, Sainsbury’s benefits from a large and spacious physical estate that’s visited by a huge number of people very regularly because of its wider food offer.

The company said that by working closely with the brands, it will “retail exclusive product ranges and support the expansion of the broader clothing offering, particularly across more specialist product areas such as curve, maternity, lingerie and tailoring”.

The wider choice on offer due to the inclusion of the brands should help to “drive new customer acquisition, catering to the demand Tu is seeing for an increased selection of fashion brands, broader range of styles and price ranges to supplement its popular own brand range”. For example, it said almost 40% of branded sales at Tu.co.uk this year came from its contemporary clothing brand offer.

As well as the brands in-store, customers will also be able to shop the full range of over 30 brand partners online at Tu.co.uk.

The initial stores getting the fashion destination hubs will be Stanway in Colchester, Crayford in Dartford, Bybrook in Ashford, Longwater in Norwich, Calcot in Reading, Osmaston Park in Derby, Selly Oak in Birmingham, Sydenham in London, and London Colney in St Albans.

They’re all high footfall stores and will offer between four and seven of the brands that will arrive in-store between 24 September and 6 October.
