Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) has completed the transformation of a historic building into a luxury hotel in Rome, informs Archinect.
Palazzo Capponi, located on the historic Via di Ripetta, takes inspiration from the city’s architectural heritage, focusing on the evolution of vaulted ceilings—from the Roman to Baroque periods.
Built in the 16th century, the aforesaid palazzo has undergone several modifications over the centuries. In the 1950s, two wings were added, as well as significant internal changes to accommodate office space, which resulted in the displacement and repainting of 17th-century frescoes, which have now been restored and revived.
The collaboration between ZHA and luxury developer Romeo Design began in 2025, with the team reimagining the interior layout to create a seamless sequence of spaces from the entrance to the guest rooms. The former courtyard now serves as a vaulted lobby with a retractable glass roof, providing a central point for guests to access the grand staircases and gardens.
In contrast to traditional hotel schemes that emphasize uniformity, the layout of Palazzo Capponi enables a more personalized approach.
According to ZHA, the team incorporated Italian craftsmanship into the design, furnishing each room with individual elements inspired by the intersecting vaults and intricate detailing.
The hotel has 74 rooms and suites, each characterized by an interplay of materiality, light, and form.
