December consumer confidence finished 2025 on a cheerier note, adding another two points to GfK’s long-running Consumer Confidence Index that had also seen a six-point gain in November.
So the data’s compiler could even allow itself to ask if the 20-point year-on-year rise over 2025 bodes well for the consumer outlook in 2025? Of course, we have to remember that the main reading is still weak.
Joe Staton, its Client Strategy Director, said Friday: “Although the headline figure of -22 means the nation’s confidence is still firmly in negative territory, optimism for our personal finances for the next 12 months shows a notable recovery from the depressed -29 reported this time last year.
“Recovery in this number is important as it best reflects household financial optimism and control over personal budgets. Despite the severe cost-of-living crisis still impacting most households, this slow but persistent movement towards positive territory for the personal finance measure looking ahead is an encouraging sign for the year to come.”
Alongside the slender gain in consumer confidence, the nation’s current Personal Financial Situation also rose two points month-on-month to -14 , some 14 points better than a year ago, while the Forecast for Personal Finances over the next 12 months also increased one point to -2, which is 27 points higher than this time last year.
The measure for the General Economic Situation of the country during the last 12 months rose five points against November's reading to stand at -44, which is 22 points higher than in December 2025 while expectations for the General Economic Stuation over the next 12 months increased one point to -25, some 28 points better than December 2025.
TheMajor Purchase Index is also up one point on the month to -23, 11 points higher than this month last year and the Savings Index is up two points at +27, seven points higher than this time last year.
