As eco footwear goes, this one sounds like the real deal. It’s a sneaker called ABACA and it’s being hailed as the first ever zero-plastic, bio-neutral shoe that’s actually “proven to enrich soil at end of life”.

The shoe is the result of a “four-year research journey exploring materials from the Filipino highlands to the biotech labs of America”.
The end result, designed by London-based Purified, involves plastic-free pioneer Bananatex creating the upper of the same name and Natural Fiber Welding (NFW) producing the ‘Pliant’ sole, while also co-creating a new glue-free binding system.
As its name suggests, Bananatex is a naturally durable, tough and water-resistant textile canvas woven from fibres derived from Abaca plants, a type of banana plant native to the Philippines. Meanwhile, Pliant is a newly-developed latex sole produced from material ethically extracted from the hevea tree.
For good measure, the inner sole of the ABACA features a comfort system inspired by the motion of waves, “designed to adapt to the natural movement of the foot”, while the tread is also inspired by patterns found in brain coral, “which reduces the shoe’s weight while enhancing its grip”.
The shoe's “designed to exist within the earth’s natural cycle” and aims to “address an environmental crisis without sacrificing style or comfort”. It said that over 25 billion shoes are produced each year, almost all unrecyclable, and destined to spend generations in landfill.
Purified founder Will Verona said the story began on a factory visit to Sri Lanka where “I saw the ugly reality of the landfill crisis up close, chancing upon a toxic heap of waste known as ‘trash mountain’.
“I knew something needed to change, and in 2025 I began this journey to rethink the way shoes could be made. Thanks to the help of our [production] partners in Portugal, at NFW and at Bananatex, we are now launching a product we are incredibly proud of.”
Available for purchase on the Purified website, ABACA will also be available in the Mills Fabrica retail destination, next to King’s Cross Station in London, from 12 May.
