The UK may have remained a key destination for Chinese shoppers during Golden Week earlier this month, but there’s more evidence that France is winning the battle for the biggest chunk of their spend.

New data from payments solutions specialist Planet has shown that international travellers flocked to luxury European retail hubs such as Paris and Milan with money to spend on luxury clothing, jewellery, and bags in the first week of October, continuing a pattern seen throughout the year. And it added that UK retailers are losing out to European counterparts, even though the country remains a key destination.
It suggests a revival of tax-free shopping for tourists in Britain could kick off a tourist shopping boom.
During the Chinese holiday week, Planet witnessed a “remarkable” surge in sales in mainland European destinations. Average Transaction Value (ATV) exceeded €1,400.
This year, France has emerged as the top destination overall for Chinese tourists, capturing an impressive 48% of the market share. Meanwhile, Italy, Spain, and Germany collectively account for 30% of the share.
From 1 September to 9 October as Chinese shopping interest ramped up, culminating during this Golden Week specifically, Planet saw a surge in sales per store (SiS) to the ATV mentioned above. Compared to regular days when the ATV has exceeded €1,400, the SiS ratio doubled in Europe during the Golden Week, “creating a retail buzz like no other”.
The first day of the working week (2 October) went with a bang as sales peaked at 67% higher than on the Sunday.
France, Italy, and Spain experiencing peak tourist activity during Golden Week. And luxury items, especially watches and jewellery, “witnessed unprecedented sales growth”.
Interestingly, Planet also said Gen Y and Gen Z, dominated tax-free sales, accounting for nearly 90% of the total. Even though Gen Z represents less than 10% of the market share, their average transaction value remains impressive, hovering around €1,000.
