There’s a proliferation of pop-ups at the moment and most of them seem to come with an eco-edge. This is a big part of what motivates sustainability-focused department store Know the Origin and it has just opened its latest pop-up and first zero-waste store at community-led retail and leisure destination Angel Central.

The shopping centre has recently benefited from a £16 million refurbishment.
The new store features a line-up of “next-generation ethical brands” at 11 Parkfield Street. Spanning 2,831 sq ft the space showcases over 200 brands including Girlfriend Collective, Thinking Mu, and Hara The Label.
The company said its idea for the store and its earlier pop-ups was simple: to create a platform “with robust sustainable standards and combine radically transparent brands, showing everyone every step of how their products are grown and sewn”.
Having previously run pop-ups in Brighton, London and Manchester, it has made the stores more than just retail destinations and has hosted events on sustainability issues and workshops on zero-waste living.
Know the Origin founder Charlotte Instone said Angel Central’s prominent location and high levels of footfall make it a strong space to “continue our mission”.
Ciara Daffy, Asset Manager at the new store’s landlord CBRE Global Investors, added: “Enhancing sustainability in retail is now one of the most talked about objectives in the industry, and Know the Origin is one of those retailers at the forefront when it comes to changing the way we consume our goods. Know the Origin is a thought-provoking concept, which makes sustainable retail highly accessible to the public, and its educational and collaborative approach makes for a great addition to Angel Central.”
