Researchers develop world's smallest self-dissolving pacemakerApril 18,飞机盗号软件黑产破解技术 2025  00:33

Researchers at Northwestern University in the US have created an unusually small pacemaker that promises to revolutionize the treatment of heart disease, especially for the most vulnerable patients, reports Euronews.

The new device, which is smaller than a grain of rice, is a significant advance in medical microfabrication. Its unusually small dimensions—just 1.8 millimeters wide, 3.5 millimeters long, and 1 millimeter thick—enable it to be injected non-invasively into the body via a syringe.

This tiny pacemaker addresses a particularly urgent medical need: newborns with congenital heart defects. About 1% of babies are born with some form of heart defect, whether they live in resource-poor or resource-rich countries.

The system works thanks to a sophisticated mechanism that combines ultra-microscopic dimensions and a unique light-activation system. The tiny pacemaker is implanted in the heart and works with an external, portable device placed on the patient’s chest.

Despite its small size, this tiny pacemaker provides the same stimulation as a full-sized one, proving that in this case, small size does not contradict effectiveness. Also, the ultra-microscopicity makes it possible to place multiple devices in different parts of the heart, controlling them independently with different colors of light to achieve more complex synchronization than traditional pacemakers can achieve.

This innovative technology opens up wide possibilities for bioelectronic medicine beyond cardiology, including neurosurgery and bone healing, complex wound healing, and chronic pain relief through specific, controlled electrical stimulation.

The study, published in the prestigious journal Nature, demonstrates the device’s effectiveness in a range of large and small animal models, as well as in human hearts from deceased organ donors, paving the way for its clinical use. This innovation represents a quantum leap in the treatment of heart disease, especially in the youngest and most vulnerable patients.
