UK Independent sportswear retailers are facing up to another major sports brand cutting supplies to them, this time it’s Japanese brand Asics that will become the latest major producer to cut off supply to hundreds of small UK businesses.

It’s a pattern seen widely in the sector with Asics mirroring major peers Nike and Adidas in cutting out smaller independent retailers in favour of big chains, such as Sports Direct and JD Sports in the UK, and selling direct.
Many of the UK independents are understood to have received emails last month telling them supplies would be halted from January.
In a letter seen by The Guardian newspaper, Asics said it was halting supplies from next year after “reassessing the relationship with many of our customers”. Fashionnetwork.com has contacted the company for comment without reply.
It’s a major blow to businesses that are just beginning to recover after the pandemic. Dipu Patel, the owner of Euro Sports in north London, told the newspaper that Asics product sales account for around 40% of its footwear sales.
He added: “We had to let Nike go, but their range is mainly fashion shoes now. We built Asics up over the year as the specialist shoe, and to have that taken away is a bitter pill to swallow.”
