Daily fluctuations of the testosterone hormone affect romantic behavior rather than sexual desire, researchers from the University of California, Santa Barbara have found. And the findings of their study were published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.
It is generally accepted that the level of testosterone in men is directly related to their sexual desire. But the results of new work cast doubt on this theory, especially for men who are in long-term relationships.
The aforesaid team of researchers measured the testosterone level and sexual desire of 41 men aged 18-26 every day for a month. Testosterone was within normal limits in all of them. Also, the participants filled out questionnaires about their desires, fantasies, and actions regarding their partner. Some were in relationships, others were single.
According to the results of the study, 759 records were made. Analysis of the data showed that single men had higher testosterone levels on days when they reported meeting or dating a girl. According to researchers, this indicates that the body begins to produce hormones, feeling the possible competition of a man with other males; there is a similar tendency in animals, too.
In contrast, there were no testosterone fluctuations in men who were in permanent relationships or married. But, as the researchers emphasized, they showed a "higher sexual desire" at various stages of the experiment.
The researchers concluded that men in relationships would experience the same—if not more—sexual desire than single men, and would only need a standard dose of testosterone to satisfy it. The increase in the level of this hormone does not have a particular effect on the libido, experts emphasized.
