John Lewis Partnership may be closing some of its department stores, but it's also investing in its flagship properties and it's about to start renovating the facade of its Peter Jones store in London’s Chelsea.
The giant seven-floor department store, which sits in a key position as Sloane Square merges into the King’s Road, was granted planning permission for the works in May last year. It has now started the multi million pound renovation as it seeks to regenerate interest in physical shopping post-lockdowns.
The work is focused on the exterior of the building with the glass facade being renovated, as well as the windows on the ground floor, the entrances and canopy. There will also be a larger entrance to the shop on the King’s Road.
And planning permission also exists for further work that isn't happening at present but that the company could decide to undertake in the future. That would include the seventh-floor garden terrace being opened to the public, which could be a key attraction at a time when experiences are as important as products in getting shoppers into physical stores.
The company has worked with heritage consultants Purcell and architects, Sergison Bates on the plans.
Peter Jones is hugely important to John Lewis and acts as the chain’s flagship in the affluent Chelsea neighbourhood.
When the company announced a number of store closures last month, it also said that it would be investing in existing locations with executive director Pippa wicks saying that the company wants to “reinvigorate the shop as a public asset”.
