Gran Canaria has once again placed swimwear fashion in the spotlight. From October 2 to 5, the island hosted a new edition of its renowned swimwear-focused event, the Gran Canaria Swim Week. Held at its usual venue, the Expomeloneras Convention Center, this year’s edition included, for the first time in 16 years, an additional outdoor location at Pasito Blanco Marina, where the opening day of shows took place.

According to Minerva Alonso, the government councillor for economic development, industry, trade, and handicrafts at the Gran Canaria Cabildo, in an interview with FashionNetwork.com, “The program has been built on years of experience and planning, with clear goals and strong teamwork,” reflecting the positive feedback from participating brands.

This year, the event added an extra day to its schedule, resulting in a record-breaking increase in visibility. The 2025 edition generated over 3.3 million social media impressions, marking a 35% growth compared to last year. This impressive achievement was made possible through initiatives such as a dedicated buyers’ zone and the presence of high-profile personalities, including Valentina Ferrer and Stella Maxwell, who served as ambassadors for the event.

A new strategic partnership with an eye on the US market

The standout highlight of this edition was the strategic alliance established between the Gran Canaria Cabildo and the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA). As Minerva Alonso explained, this collaboration serves as “a gateway to Europe for American brands” while simultaneously enhancing the competitiveness of local businesses. Echoing these sentiments, Elizabeth Ritger, head of development at CFDA, stated that this partnership will help “give our designers greater visibility, allowing them to reach new markets around the world.”

As part of this collaboration, two CFDA-affiliated brands had the opportunity to present their swimwear collections on the Gran Canaria runway. One of these was Spanish designer Alejandra Alonso Rojas, whose handcrafted designs are inspired by family memories. The other was New York-based Cynthia Rowley, who showcased her “surf-leisure” collection, designed with a strong focus on sustainability.

In addition to these two brands, another US label made its mark at the event. Guess, which established a presence on the island at the Blue Marlin Ibiza Sky Lounge Gran Canaria over the summer, went a step further by presenting its new Spring/Summer 2025 collection. The brand’s lineup featured bohemian, summer-inspired styles with a focus on luxury and environmental responsibility.

In total, 36 local, national, and international brands participated in the event, presenting a diverse array of swimwear proposals. Among the local brands, notable participants included Elena Morales, who unveiled 'Amarte', a collection inspired by the Mediterranean, combining fashion and art through embroidered fabrics and artisanal glazed ceramic details. Emerging designer Patricia Caro made her mark with her 'Tropical Goth' concept, while Aurelia Gil presented her 'Tradition, Passion, Innovation' capsule, inspired by ice cream sundaes and inviting viewers to see the world through the eyes of children. Palmas, led by designer Pedro Palmas, replicated the aesthetic of his 'Essence' bridal collection, inspired by 1970s pop art and geometric minimalism.

Representing the Spanish fashion scene were iconic names such as Ágatha Ruiz de la Prada, who stayed true to her playful roots with a colourful collection featuring plasticised fabrics and sheer details, and Dolores Cortés, who drew inspiration from African dance. Internationally, the event saw participation from London-based designer Melissa Odabash, Stockholm-based luxury label Kamilla Belmont, and London’s Alexandra Miro, showcasing a range of eclectic and sophisticated designs.

The event concluded on October 5 with the presentation of the 2025 Gran Canaria Swim Week Awards. This year, the award for Best Emerging Collection went to Chacho SVNRS, the brand founded by Canarian designer Francisco Casillas, for his “Chacholand” collection, inspired by a fictional amusement park. The Best Sustainable Collection award was claimed by Econaked, recognised for its ocean-focused designs and eco-friendly ethos. Finally, the Best Overall Collection award was presented to young Asturian designer Victoria Cimadevilla, who opened the first day of shows with her 'Desert Flower' capsule collection, celebrating feminine strength and resilience.

Created in 1996 by the Department of Industry, Commerce, and Handicrafts of the Gran Canaria Cabildo and backed since 2025 by the Association of Spanish Fashion Designers (Acme), the Gran Canaria Moda Cálida program organises a range of fashion events, including Gran Canaria Swim Week, Gran Canaria Summerland, Gran Canaria Bridal Collection, and Gran Canaria Fashion&Friends.

According to the most recent data, last year’s edition generated an economic impact of €6.3 million, with a return on investment amounting to €14 million. For this year’s edition, the Swim Week was organised with significant public funding from the Cabildo, allocating nearly €3 million to support the entire Gran Canaria Moda Cálida program.
