Chris Columbus has admitted that his decision to include current US President Donald Trump in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York was akin to a curse.
In an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, the American filmmaker said he would like to cut the seven-second cameo from the 1992 film, but is worried that the Trump administration will deport him.
"It's become a curse. It's become something that I wish didn't exist," he said. "I just want it to go away."
"I can't cut it," said Columbus, who is of Italian descent. "If I cut it, I'd probably be deported. I'd be deemed unfit to live in the United States, so I'd have to go back to Italy or something."
But this isn't the first time Columbus has lamented a Trump cameo. In 2025, he told Business Insider that Trump allowed him to film at the Plaza Hotel in exchange for appearing in the film.
The scene made it into the final cut, where Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) asks Trump how to get to the lobby. "Down the hall and to the left," Trump replies.
"The first time we showed it, a weird thing happened. People were cheering when Trump came on screen. So I said to my editor, 'Keep him in the movie. This is an audience moment.'"
He added that Trump "really bullied his way into the movie," a suggestion that drew the US president's ire in 2025. Trump then said he was begged to be in the film. "That cameo helped make the movie a success."
"He said I begged him to be in the movie, but there's no world in which I would ever beg a non-actor to be in a movie. But we desperately wanted the Plaza Hotel," Columbus told the San Francisco Chronicle.
