A team of researchers from leading Chinese universities has identified 125 different viruses with a high probability of transmission from animals to humans. Of these, 36 were previously unknown to science, reports the South China Morning Post.
The virologists studied 28 species of farm animals that died of diseases. The bodies of 461 individual animals were examined, and 125 viruses—including 36 previously unknown ones—were found in their bodies.
Of these 125 viruses identified, 39, according to researchers, have a high probability of transmission to both other animals as well as humans. Eleven of them have previously been detected in humans.
Researchers are particularly concerned about pathogens found in mink and raccoon dogs. Scientists have noted that the likelihood of their transmission to other animals increases in intensive breeding conditions.
Among the discoveries is the HKU5 coronavirus, which was transmitted from bats to mink on a farm where an outbreak of pneumonia had previously been recorded, as well as the first case of a nutria coronavirus. A new type of coronavirus, “rabbit” coronavirus, was found in the bodies of some of the animals, as well as several other viruses of this type.
