There’s been a partial move away from big-name retailers opening multiple branches on destination shopping streets post-pandemic, but Uniqlo is bucking that trend and Thursday sees the debut of its latest megastore.

It’s on the corner of Oxford Street and barely a stone’s throw away from other giant branches on Oxford Street, Regent Street and in Covent Garden.
Ahead of opening day, the company showed Fashionnetwork.com around the space that’s adjacent to the all-important Elizabeth Line tube station (it’s virtually ‘wrapped around’ Tottenham Court Road station) and that also spans both Oxford Street and Charing Cross Road.
It’s a Uniqlo-only space (unlike Regent Street where owner Fast Retailing’s upscale Theory brand also has a sizeable presence) and this underlines a key part of the firm’s strategy.

The redevelopment of the West End both before and after the pandemic has created virtual ‘zones’ where customer traffic is quite different from the visitor profiles seen a few hundred metres away down the road.
In this case, the retailer has gone big on convenience. It’s expecting more pop-in-pop-out visitors (proximity to the tube station means plenty of commuters in a hurry), as well as lots younger shoppers.
So the 1,300 sq m two-level store is packed full of easy-access stapes on display units that are slightly bigger and more defined than usual for Uniqlo to aid speed and ease. Entrances on both the streets it resides on are also ideal for an “I’m in a hurry” mindset.

It features womenswear on the ground floor, including the collaborations with JW Anderson (the latest of which launched on opening day) and UNIQLO: C with Clare Waight Keller. Plus there’s men’s and kidswear on the first floor.
The firm’s UT and UTme! offer is prominent and in fact, the store showcases one of the largest dedicated UT sections in the UK with new and archive designs, located on the first floor.
To also celebrate the Capcom 40th UT collection, the Japanese video game company has created an original game entitled UT Adventure that has been installed at the One Oxford Street store.

The “action shopping game” sees the main character having to battle aliens to recapture stolen Capcom 40th UT items.
And as part of the UTme! offering, Uniqlo has partnered with local London graphic designer and illustrator Jada Bruney. Alongside her staircase installation within the store, she’ll also be designing a limited edition UTme! featuring her illustrations.
The first 100 customers through the door on opening day and again on Saturday will receive a Uniqlo One Oxford Street goody bag including the mini round shoulder bag that has a big space dedicated to it in-store.

The first 20 customers on each day will also be challenged to fill their free bag with Uniqlo items, receiving all the contents free of charge.
At the moment, the company has a total of close to 2,400 stores across the world, including Japan, Asia, Europe and North America.
But its presence in the UK is small by comparison. Clearly though, it’s pulling out all the stops for the new space that’s marks only its 18th in the UK, although that will become 19 on 25 April when it opens on another key UK shopping thoroughfare — Edinburgh’s Princes Street.
