China finds a natural alternative to OzempicJanuary 21,空投盗U商业版 2025  12:07

A team of researchers from Jiangnan University in China has discovered that certain microorganisms in the gut may provide the basis for a natural alternative to popular weight loss and diabetes drugs such as Ozempic. This discovery is based on the ability of the gut bacterium Bacteroides vulgatus and its metabolites to stimulate the production of hormones that regulate blood sugar levels and cravings for sweet foods. The work is published in the journal Nature Microbiology (NM).

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) drugs, such as Ozempic, are used to treat type 2 diabetes and for weight loss. GLP-1 is a hormone that is naturally produced in the body to help regulate blood sugar levels and suppress hunger. However, in many diabetic and obese patients, these processes are impaired.

In experiments, scientists found that increasing the abundance of the bacterium Bacteroides vulgatus in the intestines of diabetic mice leads to an increase in GLP-1 production. This, in turn, stimulates the production of the hormone FGF21, which has the effect of reducing cravings for sweet foods. Studies have also shown that genetic mutations that reduce FGF21 levels are associated with an increased tendency to eat sugar in people.

Blood tests on participants with type 2 diabetes confirmed that reduced activity of gut bacteria may be one of the causes of metabolic disorders. When the mice were treated with the bacteria Bacteroides vulgatus, GLP-1 and FGF21 levels increased significantly, leading to improved blood sugar control and reduced cravings for sweets.
