Oxford Street gets go-ahead for £90m upgradeBy

As the discussion around the future of London’s Oxford Street continues, what used to be Europe's busiest shopping thoroughfare has received a boost this week with Westminster Council approving the first stage of funding for a £90 million revamp of it.

The plans include reducing traffic on the street and increasing visitor space. The aim is to deliver a “world class offer and experience” that should make the memory of its post-pandemic era, when it's been blighted by American-style candy/souvenir stores, a distant one.

The stretch from Tottenham Court Road to Marble Arch will even get wider pavements, redesigned crossings and more foliage in a bid to improve the overall environment and make the street more appealing to potential visitors.

The important space at junctions, such as Oxford Circus will also be redesigned to make them more pedestrian-friendly.

It's not quite the traffic-free/pedestrian-focused shopping ideal that campaigners have pushed for over the past few decades, but it will be an undeniable improvement. And along with the many developments that are happening along the street, it's an important move for a shopping neighbourhood that has suffered a lot since the onset of the pandemic.

As well as the arrival of those American candy stores, the street has seen the disappearance of a number of key flagships with some major retailers deciding to focus their physical store investment elsewhere. The failure of other businesses – most notably Arcadia and Debenhams – also saw Oxford Street landmarks such as Topshop and the latter’s flagship department store disappearing.

The news is likely to please key retail leaders, such as Julian Dunkerton of Superdry, who have pushed for more investment in down-at-heel Oxford Street at the same time as neighbouring locations, such as Bond and Regent Streets, have been thriving.
